Yes, you've read plenty about the catastrophe called Katrina, Yes, you've discussed the Barnum & Bailey (excuse me, Bush) administration. Yes, you've watched poor people become visible like never before.

Yet there's more to consider now that we have some distance from Katrina's immediate effects. It's time for us to face up to what we've done and what we've allowed to be done during the past 25 years. We need to reconsider what we now consider "the basics." Until we do that, the working poor and the unemployed will continue to suffer at our hands.
