In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the presence of iron in carbon particulates enhances ultrastructural perturbation in human monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) after phagocytosis. We used 1-[micro]m synthetic carbon-based particulates, designed to simulate environmental particulates of mass median aerodynamic diameter [less than or equal to] 2.5 [micro]m (P[M.sub.2.5]).
