Hydro celebrates centenary.(NORWAY)

Although Hydro Agri now trades under the name Yara, the company is nevertheless celebrating its centenary on December 2nd this year. The company was founded in 1905, when Hydro pioneers Sam Eyde and Kristian Birkeland succeeded in harnessing hydroelectricity to produce nitrogen fertilizer. Operating with international capital roughly equal to the total Norwegian state budget at that time, they launched a wave of change that transformed a remote, sparsely populated region of southern Norway.
