Pakistan had a mid-1990 population of about 112 million with a per capita income of $390, inhabiting an area about the size of Spain and Italy (800,000 square kilometers). Population density of 141 per square kilometer is almost double the 1988 average for low-income economies, and about 29 per cent of the population lives in urban areas. Population growth is estimated at 3.1 per cent a year. Social development indicators are poor, reflecting long-standing problems in providing basic health and education services.
