An examination of the new drug pipelines of chemical firms with major pharmaceutical operations suggests a decidedly mixed

prognosis. While few doubt the continued R&D strength of such major players as Bayer (Leverkusen) and Roche (Basel), observers say that others--including many smaller U.S. drug units--are clearly struggling to maintain a healthy future.
