I FIRST started exploring the French Alps 50 years ago, prompted by a newly acquired passion for motoring, maps and rally navigation. No wonder I took to what I now call 'motor mountaineering'. I spent most of the first ten years of my life in the high Himalayas, which left me with an insatiable passion for lofty heights.
