I FIRST started exploring the French Alps 50 years ago, prompted by a newly acquired passion for motoring, maps and rally navigation. No wonder I took to what I now call 'motor mountaineering'. I spent most of the first ten years of my life in the high Himalayas, which left me with an insatiable passion for lofty heights.

The French Alps are a kaleidoscope of scenic vistas, colours, perfumes, lakes, burgeoning streams, roaring rivers, broad-leaved woodlands, pine forests and peaks by the thousand. The terrain is seductive in any season ...
