Sep. 8--National Penn Bancshares leapt into the heart of Pennsylvania on Wednesday, agreeing to pay about $96 million to buy a Centre County community bank.

National Penn, of Boyertown, will take over Nittany Financial Corp. of State College. Nittany Financial is the parent company of Nittany Bank, which has five branches and $326.5 million assets in the State College area. It also operates two investment management companies there.
