THE FIRST TIME YOU SEE George Balanchine's Symphony in C, with its flashy white tutus and gallant partnering, its elegant steps and its mastery of ballet vocabulary, you might take it for an imitation of, or homage to, nineteenth-century classical ballet. The more closely you examine this 1947 work, though, the more you perceive its modernity. For one thing, it has no story. No folk or fairy tale drives the dance, no plot wrung from E. T. A. Hoffmann or William Shakespeare, but Georges Bizet's glittering 1855 symphony, written at seventeen, a newly discovered, unpublished work ...
