Washington -- With the American flag above the White House at half-staff for William Rehnquist, 16th chief justice of the United States, President Bush welcomed John Roberts into the Oval Office at 7:15 a.m. Monday and offered him the Supreme Court's prized "center chair."
Standing before television cameras 45 minutes later, Bush, with Roberts at his side, spoke of his nominee's intellect, integrity, temperament, fairness and civility. "He's a gentleman," Bush said.
