Sir James Frazer's interpretations of classical texts have been the subject of much debate, as when, in drawing on Pliny's account of the mistletoe, he claimed that the Druids cut the plant in the sixth month, rather than on the sixth day of every month ("omnia sexta luna") (Frazer 1890, vol. 2, 285). [1] What, though, of Frazer's renderings of languages he knew perhaps less well? An important source for The Golden Bough was the work of Wilhelm Mannhardt (1831-80), a German disciple of the brothers Grimm.
