Beginning under cover of darkness on June 19, 1941, final preparations were underway for one of the largest operations in modern military history.

Along the western border of the Soviet Union for some 2,000 miles, German troops advanced, making sure to remain concealed in woods or behind whatever other barriers existed. German soldiers, nearly three million of them, were on tap for the upcoming operation.

On June 20, Wehrmacht commanders demanded absolute silence from the men in the woods. Even their movement within the woods was severely restricted.
