It has been traditionally considered impossible to get efficient light emission from silicon as it is an indirect band gap semiconductor. Using a silicon waveguide fabricated with standard CMOS technology, Intel researchers recently demonstrated the first continuous-wave silicon optical amplifier and laser based on stimulated Raman scattering. Such an achievement not only shows that silicon can be considered as a photonic material for light amplification and lasing, but also represents a milestone towards future monolithic integration of electronic and photonic circuits in a ...
