Living next door to a gas station or an auto repair business might be associated with an increased risk of childhood leukemia, according to a study published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine (2004;61:773-778).

Researchers say that the problem might come from exposure to benzene, a gas emitted commonly by filling stations and vehicular repair shops. This relationship might be by chance, although the strong association and the long-term trend could be arguments for a causal association.
