AMONG the leading Impressionists, Camille Pissarro is remembered as a painter of peasants. It is a bit unfair. Rural life was only one of many themes he explored during a restless half-century of constantly pushing his art in new directions. Even in his old age, Pissarro's work took a startling turn, from the bucolic countryside to the bustling city.
