QUESTION What is the history/connection between the Black Madonna in Montserrat, Spain, and that in Rocamadour, France?
THERE are many famous black Madonnas around the world including La Negrita in Cartago, Costa Rica; Our Lady of Altotting in Bavaria, Germany; Our Lady of the Hermits in Einsiedeln, Switzerland; Our Lady of Jasna Gora in Czestochowa, Poland; and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.
No less than 150 can be found in southern France, most tracing their origins to medieval times.
