War in the Age of Enlightenment, 1700-1789. By Armstrong Starkey. (Westport, CT: Praeger, 2003. Pp. ix, 232. $67.95.

The past three decades have seen significant adjustments in views about the Enlightenment. What had once been understood as an intellectual project that merited applause has become a multifaceted phenomenon inviting disputation and moral reevaluation. In the volume under review, Armstrong Starkey enters this discussion. He succeeds in arguing that the connection between military affairs and the Enlightenment was real, complicated, and important.
