Adding tables of contents and internal indexes to online catalogs is a natural step in the progression toward a virtual library without walls. A number of libraries have already begun such projects or are seriously considering them. For most of these projects, copyright is a serious consideration. In most cases the number of publishers involved is too great to attempt to individually contact all of the publishers to obtain permission to copy the tables of contents and internal indexes of each individual title in the catalog.
