GENEALOGY OFTEN makes strange bedfellows. Who in his right mind, for instance, would ever dream that Dolley Madison, the sprightly wife of President James Madison, and Jesse James, America's most celebrated bandit, could be cousins?
But such is the case.
Both Dolley and Jesse were direct descendants of John Woodson, a military surgeon who came to Virginia in 1619. Jesse got his middle name from the Woodson branch of his family tree.
