T.S. Eliot on the limits of criticism: the anomalous 'Experiment' of 1929.(Experiment in Criticism, lecture)(Critical Essay)

The Modern Language Review | July 1, 2005| | Copyright

In 1929 Eliot delivered a lecture entitled 'Experiment in Criticism'. He never collected it, and it has been largely ignored by critics. This article argues that the essay represents a major departure from his usual conflicted position in the 1920s and 1930s about the objects of criticism. Eliot seems quickly to have come to regard the essay as a misconceived failure, but here emphasis is laid upon the productivity of that failure in propelling him towards a revised and nuanced understanding of criticism and of his place in tradition.
