GEORGE and Diana Melly have had a long and distinctly unconventionalmarriage. They haven't slept in the same bedroom for 34 years, have both had a string of affairs - and Diana would rather go on holiday with her two dogs than her husband.

He in turn occasionally escapes 'the wing commander' (as she is known) to see his long-term mistress, whom Diana dubbed the Greckel after a screeching Caribbean bird.

Yet the 68-year-old has remained married to the colourful, bisexual, flamboyant jazz singer and critic for 42 years.
