Good news on the soft-drink front! Sales of non-diet soda have declined by a remarkable 12 percent since 1998.

What's gone right? I would like to think that the downturn in sales was due to the Center for Science in the Public Interest's widely publicized 1998 report, Liquid Candy, which lambasted the soft-drink industry. (CSPI is the nonprofit publisher of Nutrition Action Healthletter.) But other forces likely played a larger role.
