NOTHING about Punta del Este is Uruguayan. At least not during the southern hemisphere's summer, when the sleepy resort on Uruguay's Atlantic coast turns into a sprawling playground for Argentines. The invasion, which starts in the new year and lasts until March, swells the town's population of 15,000 to an overflowing 300,000.

The locals complain about having to put up with Argentine snobbery, particularly from the portenos, as residents of Buenos Aires are known (visitors from the provinces, say the Uruguayans, are "just like us" and therefore all right). The portenos ...
