Shetland spill may spawn lawsuits in U.S. courts. (oil tanker Braer founders off Shetland Islands)

The Braer oil tanker disaster and subsequent oil spill off the Shetland Islands may generate lawsuits in US courts for compensation beyond the amounts provided for in the Fund Convention and the Civil Liability Convention. The two conventions provide for prompt compensation for those harmed by an oil spill and impose strict liability on oil tanker owners. The US belongs to neither convention. British claims management firm Balcombe Group PLC and solicitors Levy & McRae have joined forces to act on islanders' behalf.
