Introduction

We have called this paper 'Service to the country?' because this interrogative phrase sums up the puzzling nature of a university's commitment to its host community and to its wider region. (3) We have chosen to focus on its social and cultural 'contribution'. This is a hazy area, shot through with ambiguity and ambivalence.

We attempt, in this paper, both to identify and to make some sense of these ambiguities and ambivalences. We do this by:
