The San Isidore settlement was the brainchild of the Wagga branch of the National Catholic Rural Movement (NCRM), one of the manifestations of the Lay Apostolate of the Catholic Church. It is essential to see San Isidore in both its philosophical context (the policy of the NCRM) and its temporal context. In the latter it owes its begetting as much to the depression of the 1930s as it does to the post-Second World War reconstruction period and the Cold War with which it more obviously sits.
