My mother often complained about the hot, sultry days of July and August as the "dog days of summer."

I don't hear the saying much these days, but nothing is more descriptive. Although it is derived from the position of the Dog Star in the summer sky, I can't help but think it means that the weather is not fit for anyone, hardly a dog.
