A fall in this year's soft wheat harvest of some 5.6% from 2004 as a result of severe water shortages in many parts of the country is predicted by the French Farm Ministry.

In its first estimate for the soft wheat crop in 2005 (see table on page M/2) the Ministry's statistical unit SCEES said France is likely to produce 35.53 million tonnes this year, based on a 6.5% drop in the average yield to 7.28 tonnes/hectare.
