In October 1991, the Centers for Disease Control issued new recommendations lowering the acceptable blood lead level. This change was based on data indicating that irreversible adverse neurodevelopmental effects occur in children with chronic low-level exposure to lead. The primary source of lead poisoning is still lead-based paint, particularly in older urban housing. Other sources of lead poisoning are also common.
