James S. Harrington Sr. of Watertown, formerly of Cambridge, retired deputy chief of the Cambridge Fire Department, died Sunday at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 71.

Born in Boston and raised in Cambridge, he had lived in Watertown for the past 38 years. He graduated from Matignon High School and received a degree in fire science from Massachusetts Bay Community College.
