On 1 November 2003, the 1st Cavalry Division Artillery (Div Arty), Red Team, at Fort Hood, Texas, received a mission that initiated its historic transformation from a force FA headquarters (FFA HQ) into the 1st Cav's 5th Brigade Combat Team (BCT) to deploy to Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) II.
