WASHINGTON _ It is one of the most popular boating paintings of its time, or any time.

Three boys sit on the starboard rail of a catboat heeling before a brisk wind off the New England coast while an adult male, presumably the father of one of the boys, hunkers down by the tiller, playing out the main sheet. Clouds are abundant, but the sparkling light from the sun brightens everything, including a larger two-master tacking into the wind in the background.
