Cockle pickers banned in Wirral as stocks plummet.(News)

COCKLE pickers have been banned from harvesting shellfish in Wirral over the summer.

Stocks of the cockles are so low officials fear they will run out if they are plundered again this year.

The Environment Agency is refusing to open any of the cockle beds around the peninsula's coastline or issue any permits for the area.

Officers will now be carrying out regular patrols to enforce the rules and anyone caught will face prosecution.
