Globe Metallurgical Inc. plans to increase its production capacity in a big way and open a path to West Coast markets.
Globe, one of the first winners of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, said last week it was negotiating to buy a silicon metal production plant in Springfield, Ore., owned by Dow Corning Corp. of Midland, Mich. Globe is an Independence-based silicon metal and alloy producer.
If Globe buys the plant, its capacity to produce silicon metal would increase to 65,000 tons a year, up about 23% from its current capacity of 53,000 tons, said J. ...
