WHEN the Mersey ruled the waves, Liverpool shipowners felt honour-bound to send their greatest vessels to the Royal Fleet Reviews at Spithead, in the Solent.

Most famously, the White Star Line despatched SS Teutonic, one of the world's most advanced luxury liners, in her alternative guise as an armed merchant cruiser, for the 1897 review.

While there, this sumptuous ocean greyhound with her military capacity, was inspected by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) and an incredulous Kaiser Wilhelm II, of Germany.
