Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates (N = 31,001) were collected from patients with community-acquired respiratory tract infections during the PROTEKT US surveillance study (2000-2003). While the macrolide (erythromycin) resistance rate remained stable at [approximately equal to] 29%, the prevalence of resistant isolates containing both erm(B) and mef(A) increased from 9.7% in year 1 to 16.4% in year 3, with substantial regional variability. Almost all (99.2%) dual erm(B)+mef(A) macro...

Southern Medical Journal ; Background: PROTEKT US (Prospective Resistant Organism Tracking and Epidemiology for the Ketolide Telithromycin in the United States) was established in 2000 to monitor antimicrobial resistance among respiratory tract pathogens across the United States. Ketolides: A New Class of Antibacterial Agents for Treatment of Community-Acquired Respiratory Tract Infections in a Primary Care Setting
Mayo Clinic Proceedings ; Pathogens implicated in community-acquired respiratory, tract infections are becoming increasingly resistant to anti-bacterial therapies. Thus, there is an urgent need for new agents with activity against current resistant respiratory tract pathogens and a low potential to select for resistance or
Use of Echinacea in upper respiratory tract infection.(Featured CME Topic: Complementary and Alternative Medicine)
Southern Medical Journal ; Abstract: The significant burden of upper respiratory tract infection in adults and children, coupled with a lack of specific treatment options, invites the use of alternative therapies. Echinacea is an herb widely used for the prevention or treatment of upper respiratory tract infection. This

Molecular epidemiology of adenovirus type 7 in the United States, 1966-2000 (1). (Research).(Statistical Data Included)
Emerging Infectious Diseases ; Genetic variation among 166 isolates of human adenovirus 7 (Ad7) obtained from 1966 to 2000 from the United States and Eastern Ontario, Canada, was determined by genome restriction analysis. Most (65%) isolates were identified as Ad7b. Two genome types previously undocumented in North America were
