Back to basics: baroque music. (compact disc reissues)

From: The Economist (US) | Date: January 16, 1993 | Copyright information

Record companies are beginning to release compact disc versions of recordings of baroque music which were controversial because they involved authentic period instruments. Recordings by Wanda Landowska from the 1920s and more recent recordings are compared.

WHEN lots of musicians went back in the 1970s to playing old music on authentic, or at least authentic-sounding, instruments many critics dismissed it as a passing fad. They were wrong. The movement for authentic recordings of baroque music (ie, music composed from roughly 1600 to 1750) is gaining strength.
