Flag Day commemorates Congress' adoption on June 14, 1777 in the midst of the War of Independence of the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States. Whereas the Fourth of July celebrates the birth of our country, Flag Day celebrates the birth of its most recognized symbol.

How it started: Flag Day began 120 years ago in a Wisconsin classroom. A 19-year-old schoolteacher, Bernard John Cigrand, hung a small flag in his classroom and asked students to write an essay about what the flag meant to them. Cigrand's idea gained national attention and spawned celebrations ...
