Though generally overshadowed by the more glamorous tenor, "baritones are the workhorses of the opera world," said baritone Richard Zeller.

Baritones play fathers, brothers, friends and more often than not, the villain.

They almost never get the girl.

"We're in love with the soprano, who's in love with the tenor. Sometimes we get to kill the tenor. Sometimes the soprano kills us."

Still, "it's much more interesting than just being the love interest," he said.
