In the tranquil hour just before dawn, Shanghai could have been mistaken for many places in China.
Along the Huangpu River, old men flew kites, seeing how high they could take their contraptions of string, paper and bamboo. A group of women danced with fans. Others swayed like trees in the wind practicing qi gong, ancient exercises for longevity and health.
Under the watchful eye of his teacher, a boy with a paint can filled with water practiced calligraphy, copying a poem from memory; the strokes of the first character evaporated ...
