The Tavern League's drive to head off smoke-free bars in Madison and Appleton gained steam last week in the State Capitol, and its chief legislative chaperone has added a touch of patriotism.

On a 7-2 vote the Assembly State Affairs Committee endorsed what the Tavern League and its legislative friends call the "Smoke Free Dining Act."

The measure would -- on a statewide basis -- impose a smoking ban in the dining areas of restaurants, but it would prohibit local governments from imposing a ban on smoking in the bar areas of taverns and ...
