It is the material of the moment. Everything from kitchen worktops and dining-room floors to entire bathrooms are now being made from limestone.

Where once we might have flirted with black marble, or even multicoloured slate, now the whole country seems to have fallen in love with creamy white limestone.

But this love story doesn't always have a happy ending.
