PANEL VOTES TO SPARE MEDICAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS.(LOCAL/WISCONSIN)

The Legislature's budget committee voted Wednesday to preserve the state's medical assistance programs that serve the elderly, sick and disabled by raising state spending on them.
The committee voted 16-0 to reject the governor's proposals to generate more money for the programs by increasing the fees assessed on nursing homes and health maintenance organizations.
Instead, the committee approved pumping additional state money into the programs to ensure there are no reductions in benefits or eligibility. Gov. Jim Doyle had proposed ...
