Residents of Cerro de San Pedro, Mexico were "jubilant" after hearing a dramatic court decision involving a Canadian mining company.

The recent judgment ratified a previous court decision naming Cerro de San Pedro a preservation area and annulling the operating permit of MSX, a subsidiary of the Canadian mining company Metallica Resources. For more than 10 years, Cerro de San Pedro residents and community activists have been resisting Metallica's endeavours to forge an open-pit gold mine, according to KAIROS, Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives.
