In a recent book, Alan Ayckbourn observes that 'comedy is an essential part of any play'. (1) He asserts that 'I certainly don't decide when I sit down to write: today I'm going to write a comedy. Simply, I'm going to write a play. The degree of lightness or darkness is often initially dictated by the theme, but never to the extent that I would want the one totally to exclude the other.
