Goby roundup: the round goby is a bottom-dwelling fish native to the Caspian and Black Seas. It was carried to the great lakes in the ballast water of translantic ships.

When the dogwoods bloom--give or take a week or so, gravelly dishes rim underwater areas along streambanks and lake shores, tell-tale signs that smallmouth bass are nesting. These bronze battlers, ornery on the end of the line, go through the timeless courtship ritual of males coaxing females to their lairs to lay eggs. It's a huge investment of time and energy for male smallmouth bass, one that keeps them on or near their nests for up to three weeks. Only a few of the several thousand fertilized and closely guarded eggs will reach sexual maturity.
