A common US weed known as purslane has been discovered to contain high amounts of the beneficial fatty acid omega-3 and vitamin E. A member of the plant group portulaca, purslane has been used as a salad green in Europe. Purslane, which is drought- and salt- tolerant, could be a cost-effective food crop in areas with arid, salty soils, such as the American Southwest. Both omega-3 and vitamin E assist in protecting cell membranes in the body.
