Children living close to high-voltage power lanes in the region could be at risk of developing childhood leukaemia, medics claim.

A new study estimates that youngsters living within 200 metres of overhead power lines were about 70% more likely to develop leukaemia than those more than 600 metres away.

But, according to researchers at Newcastle University, the findings should be viewed with "caution".
