IN MAY OF 1945, Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allies, but Imperial Japan had yet to be defeated. By July, a U.S. presidential commission organized by President Harry S. Truman recommended dropping an atomic bomb on Japan to force a surrender. Truman gave the order to use the new weapon on two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
