`I placed a jar in Tennessee/ And round it was upon a hill," wrote Wallace Stevens in one of his most enigmatic poems. "It made the slovenly wilderness/ Surround that hill." For the past 50 years environmental poet Gary Snyder has been doing Stevens' experiment in reverse, placing himself on a hill and using the practice of Buddhism to control the slovenliness within.
Snyder began taking this task seriously in 1952, when he requested a fire-lookout job with the U.S. Forest Service in Washington state ...
