Phase diagrams show the materials technologist how given material mixtures will react or behave at different temperatures when completely melted together; i.e., alloyed.
Perhaps the most popular binary (two-phase) ceramic phase diagram is that for alumina-silica. Fig. 1 shows a phase diagram for this system taken from Kingery's Introduction to Ceramics (Page 305, John Wiley, 1976)(*).
